Frequently Asked Questions
« on: July 16, 2011, 03:18:51 PM »
1.  ,Q:  ,Why does the gauge register a value other than “0” out of the box?

A:  ,The gauge does not have a return-to-zero function that will pull the pointer back to the left.  ,When power is applied to the gauge it will zero itself.
  ,
2.  ,Q:  ,My fuel gauge reads backwards, does not go all the way to E or F

A:  ,More than likely a gauge/sender compatibility issue.  ,Unless specified you have a 240-33 ohm fuel gauge, ensure the sender is also a 240-33 ohm sender.
  ,
3.  ,Q:  ,My gauge pegs.

A:  ,The ground to the gauge is not good.  ,Ensure the gauge has a good chassis ground.
  ,
4.  ,Q:  ,My temp gauge never reads.

A1:  ,The body of the sender is not grounded.  ,Likely cause of this is Teflon tape or pipe dope used on the sender.  ,Threads on the sender are self sealing.
  ,
A2:  ,The normal operating temperature of the medium being monitored may be below the lowest level of the gauge.  ,Ie, if the normal operating temp of a tranny in a Dodge Ram is 120, it will not register on a 140-320 gauge.
  ,
5.  ,Q:  ,How do I set the dipswitches for my speedometer?

A:  ,Refer to Beede instruction sheet 534799, and it will walk you through the procedure.
  ,
6.  ,Q: My trim gauge is reading backwards.

A1:  ,More than likely using an OMC gauge for a Mercury sender or vica-versa.
  ,
A2:  ,Mercury has a port and starboard sender.  ,If they are using a port sender on the starboard side (or vica-versa) the mercury gauge will read backwards.
  ,
7.  ,Q:  ,My old Beede speedometer has ten switches, my new one has 12.  ,What are the extra two switches for?

A:  ,They are not ‘extra’ switches.  ,Using the old switch setting will not work with the new speedometer.  ,If you know the vehicle pulses per mile use instruction sheet 534799.  ,If you do not know the ppm, contact the factory with the switch settings for the 10 position switch and we will give you the new switch settings for the 12 position switch speedo.
  ,
8.  ,Q: My voltmeter in my 4 in 1 gauge pegs past 16V and I only have 12V going to the gauge?

A:  ,12V was connected to the stud behind the voltmeter (marked no connection).  ,When this happens, the diode inside the voltmeter gets blown and the gauge will not read correctly.  ,Return the gauge to Beede and it will be repaired for a fee.
  ,
9.  ,Q:  ,Where do I install the temp sender in my transmission?

A:  ,We are not transmission experts.  ,We do not want to give you information that may lead to the damage of your transmission.  ,Please contact a qualified service technician for this information.
  ,
  ,
10.  ,Q:  ,Why is the hourmeter in my my tach/hour running backwards?

A:  ,The hourmeter does not run backwards.  ,When it is first powered up (or in the case of an EOD tach/hour, when a tach signal is first present) the hourmeter goes through a six second cycle to tighten up the gear train mechanism.  ,This is necessary to get the ‘slop’ out of the gear train of the mechanism.  ,The cycle is made up of  ,6 backwards steps in the first 3 seconds and 6 forward steps in the next 3 seconds.  ,If for some reason the tach is run for only 3 seconds at a time (if power is lost) repeatedly, you can conceivably get the hourmeter to run backwards.  ,An example of how to do this would be to start the vehicle, let it run for 3 seconds and shut it off, then repeat this continuously.  ,It takes approx 15 of these cycles to get the hourmeter to go back one tenth of an hour.

To verify this, simply connect the tach to a battery (with an EOD tach it will need to be connected to the vehicle, and the vehicle has to be running to get the hourmeter to work) and observe the hourmeter for 6 minutes (it takes six minutes to turn 1/10 of an hour) and observe the hourmeter advancing in the positive direction.  ,All mechanical tach/hours are ‘burned in’ at the factory.  ,There is no way for the tach to run forward here and then all of a sudden run backwards at another location.

Apparently I have hooked up my volt meters wrong and as a result they only read about 11 volts. What is the charge to repair this and what is the time factor. They are not very expensive to begin with
